My mom's refrain for 2-1/2 years has been I don't feel good. I believe her. We tried anti-anxiety medications; nothing has worked. She sleeps like a limp doll, too much, can't get out of bed. She is aware of these changes and fights them. It is distressing. I recall that stimulants are used for teens with ADHD and focus problems. Maybe this would help her. I want to research and discuss w her NP and maybe get referral for psychiatrist or gerontologist who might know more about this.
It does not 'energize' them, it simply helps calm their overactive brains and gives them a chance to settle down and plan.
IDK if these kinds of drugs are OK to use in elderly folks. That's why you'll need to take mom to see a Psychiatrist. (Most PCP's do not want to do 'mental issue' management.
An antianxiety drug would be sedating--the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish.
What are mom's health issues? She may just be winding down.
A good checkup is in order. Then you can make a decision on what, if anything, you'll want to do.
Has she ever had a full medical/physical work-up by her primary doctor, including blood work? Any other tests recently, like past 6 months?
Maybe it's her thyroid, could be many many other things. She has lethargy -- which is a very vague symptom (lethargy is not an illness, but rather a symptom of a something).
Take her to her primary physician and start there, unless she's already been seen in the past 6 months.
We're not doctors and without knowing what testing and results she's had recently, it's sort of a waste of time to ask this forum. I wish success in helping your Mom fell better!
Do not give an elderly patient anything with a black box warning!
See the "Beer's List" of contraindicated meds for people over 65.
It is so good that you want to help your Mom.
But this idea is half-baked, grasping at straws.
I am so glad you asked your question here today!
Again, ask any doctor first, but there are vitamins and supplements that could be missing from taking certain medications. Get a med check with her health checkup.
OTC:
Vit. B-12
Magnesium
Omega 3
do have an effect on depression or tiredness.
Have her checked for a UTI
Doctor, doctor doctor!
Was she tested for Covid recently?
