My mother-in-law, 97, and her daughter, 72, live in KY. My husband went up in February and found his sister in a psychotic state, his mother in a filthy bed and crying saying she was hungry. His sister was rushed to the hospital and admitted. Though she has since been released, she can no longer care for herself, much less her mother, so my husband is still there. According to his mother's physician, in order to get her moved into a nursing home under Medicaid requirements, she would have to first be admitted to the hospital for a minimum of 3 days, then transferred to a nursing home. Because of COVID-19, nursing homes are on lock-down, not accepting new patients. The doctor can not admit his mother to the hospital because she is not in need of critical medical intervention at this time. Everything is geared towards the COVID-10 medical emergencies. So, my husband remains in KY as caretaker for his mother and sister, while I am in NC dealing with the COVID-19 crisis alone. They are in a rural area in SE KY, so in home nursing care is not available.
Can the Dr. order in home health care for either or both of them? Anything? Even if it's part time, anything would help.
He might be able to find some help through the Kentucky Dept. of Aging and Disabled. Google that and Dept. of Aging, Disabled, Federal, DC. He may also find some help through whatever county they're living in; Google 'that county's' services for elderly, disabled.
Maybe there are churches close by that have or know of companies, programs, volunteers, and/or healthcare workers who would help with some things; Google those churches in the area, and call to ask.
He can check into meal delivery services and Meals on Wheels through the county. Google Meals on Wheels, and then meal delivery services to see others that are pay companies that may offer deals for someone in their situation. Also, call to find someone for housekeeping that may come in, everyone masked; that would help.
It will be hard to impossible to get help because of the virus, but maybe he can find some to help him with the two of them for now since that's all that can be done at this time and from your description.
