contact a few assisted living communities in your area and arrange for tours, arrange for someone to stay with your dad then take your mom on a tour of them.

Be prepared for sticker shock. These places can cost ~$70k per year.

Here is a really great answer from one of our experts on moving both parents to a place where they can be together:

Ka2Bob--You could call your local hospitals to find out about all such communities in your area. And then, like dwestlake said, you can arrange for tours of these places. True about the sticker shock too..... Good luck.

Thank you for your responses. The difficulty I am having is finding a place for a physically and mentally healthy mother to live with a frail father with Alzheimer's. I am hoping to find a place that will be able to accommodate both of their social needs. What do you think of them moving to a retirement community and then hiring an in-home caregiver to help my mom with caring for my dad? An assisted living center would probably not be a place my mom would be comfortable living in.

Yes, Bob, that is a very good idea---to have them move together into a retirement community, and then hiring an aide to come into their apartment to assist with care for your Dad. As long as your Dad has not become combative, or could become violent or too stressful for your Mom, this situation could work for you. Once they were in a community like that, if your Dad got worse and it wasn't working out having him in the apt. with your mother, your Dad could be moved to another part of the continuing care community. And in that case, your mother could visit him every day if she wanted.
