My mom refuses to bathe on a regular basis and sits in her recliner 24/7. She is starting to have some areas that look like they are beginning to break down. What is the best product that I can get to help heal and prevent skin breakdown?

WOW! its an epidemic...my mom is a chair potato too! what is going on....maybe they are all talking to each other lol.....i am just putting bandaids on after drying off the spots and i got a piece of memory foam like a twin size mattress size and cut a piece for the chair. Also try to get her to sit a little sideways during the day because the bad spot hurts when it gets red. There is only so much you can do when they wont let you help.

Can you put an air matress on the chair? Decubitus ulcers are often difficult to treat, if not impossible and can lead to sepsis. Prevention is so much easier than treatment.
If it were me, I'd tell her we were going to the mall, to a restaurant, anywhere and then I'd pull up in the parking lot of the doctor's office.

we use Boudreaux's Butt Paste, Diaper Rash Ointment, you can get it online
with my mom - she has a pressure sore on her butt - nothing we can do about it. I take the creme, put a bunch on a panti liner or maxi pad, then adhere that to her pants or diaper. the creme stays on the place it needs to, and it doesn't get irritated by the diaper becuase it's got a layer over top that's soft or cushiony.

it's worked really well for us and the hospice nurses said it was a great idea.

Sometimes, all you can do is all you can do. If she won't let you help her, get the best products you can, do what you can. If she won't see a doctor will she let a nurse come in? Even then, she may not cooperate, but you will feel better. Some in-home agencies have nursing care.

LynnD,I have the exact same situation with my mother. When decubitis starts, I boil a saline solution, cool the solution, apply it to the wound, cover it as best as possible with a "breathable" bandaid, & within a few days it's almost healed. this is an ongoing occurence since I can't get her to move either.

Well, you can go online and order those products, most don't require an rx. Knowing that you have experience, I don't have to tell you that sometimes you have to over-rule the patient - in this case I guess all you can do is put on your blinders, and do what you know professionally is the best for her. I feel for you.

The problem is I can't get her out of the chair. That is where she eats, sleeps, etc. She won't sit anywhere else, can't/won't lay down, and refuses to go to the doctor. I know about the condition, I just don't know what is available to the general public. I have many years experience of caring for people with this, but have had access to products available to hospitals.

get her out of the chair. Skin breaks down very fast once there is a pressure point. There are products available, but I'd suggest that you get her out of the chair, evaluate the spots, keep her off the spots & change her position frequently and have the skin looked at by a doc asap.

you may want to google "decubitis" and "wound care" for background info and some sense of how urgent her problem.
