Both the VA and Medicaid will pay spouses. For Medicaid, it varies by state, there are around 15 states that will pay a spouse.

Most people on this site mistakenly believe that a spouse cannot be a paid caregiver. There are some Medicaid programs that will in fact pay a spouse but it depends on the state, some states will not pay a spouse and some will. There are around 15 states that will pay a spouse. It has nothing to with “in sickness and in health”. It’s about realizing that spouses often have to leave their job in order to care for their spouse.
In your state there are NO non-Medicaid state programs that will pay family caregivers and unfortunately Illinois does not pay spouses. The good news is, if he qualifies for Medicaid, then you can contact the Illinois office on aging and get him home care which will allow you to work outside the home.

Is your husband a veteran? Because he may be eligible for VA assistance. The VA DOES pay spouses to be caregivers.

Thanks, we just got the information to get pops signed up with a VA primary caregiver. I don't know if he will end up qualifying for anything else but just having his checkups and basic health care provided by the VA will be priceless. They have a lot more experience dealing with TBI victims which will make life easier for us when he's sick. He doesn't qualify for medicaid in Tennessee.

I don't think a Spouse can be paid. You know, for better or worse. You may be able to get help depending on ur income. Medicaid has homecare. Office of Aging maybe able to supply an aide. These would help you get out of the house.
